| Choosing this month's "Artist
of the Month" wasn't no where near as difficult as selecting the
tune. If I were ever grandted one final wish in this existence my request
would be to listen to this album. Another layer of difficulty existed because
it required me to take a trip along the memory ban. Also, the tune
I chose to is a revelation in verse and music of my essence. What
was not difficult was selecting Minnie
Riperton as the featured
"Artist of the Month".
Minnie, a classical trained singer
with a 6 octave range was a rare and unique talent. Not unlike Jimi,
Jim, and several others, she graced us with her physical presence for only
a short time, but left us her timeless spiritual manifestation. Her
career started in the late 60's with a jazz vocal ensemble called
the Rotary Connection. Her first solo album, Come To My Garden, was
released in 1971. Produced by Charles Stepeny and featuring the musical
trio of Ramsey Lewis, this album is IMHO her finest work Alas, I
will save the rest of my comments for the Minnie site. In 1974 Stevie
Wonder produced her next album, "Perfect Angel" which made Minnie a household
name. Several successful albums followed until her transendence
in 1979.
As I perused the Internet in
search of links, I only came across ONE site worth making mention of.
After running into a link which branded her as a "one-hit" wonder, I am
committed to developing a tribute to her before the year's end. Until
then, enjoy the title track, "Come To My Garden" from her first
solo album.
