This month's
featured artist is the group, STONEFUNKERS.
Yeah, I know I featured them last year,
but the newly released "OutStanding- '98"
is just too outstanding to overlook!
For the past few weeks I've been listening
to primarily two cds, Next's "Rated Next"
and "OutStanding-'98"
. The first thing I noticed about the Stonefunkers'
latest release is that it makes me smile a lot, because it's just some
good old-time (before funk went mainstream) underground FUNK. Albeit,
there are threads of hip-hop and rap, they are superbly woven into a "Sly
and the Family Stone"/ "Funkadelic/Parliment"/"Tower
of Power"/"Cold
Blood"/"Chic" base that KICKS!
From the first track to the last, I was reminded
of how to much FUN
funk essentially is lyrically as well as musically. Such lyrics
as, "standing on the verge of getting it
IN" is a nice (funny) play on a standard
funk title. So, the next time I want to party like "back in the day"
I only need to pull out ONE cd.... OUTSTANDING
'98
!
